The fossil and geologic records provide the primary data used to established absolute timescales for timetrees. For the paleontological evaluation of proposed timetree timescales, and for node-based methods for constructing timetrees, the fossil record is used to bracket divergence times. Minimum brackets minimum ages can be established robustly using well-dated fossils that can be reliably assigned to lineages based on positive morphological evidence. Maximum brackets are much harder to establish, largely because it is difficult to establish definitive evidence that the absence of a taxon in the fossil record is real and not just due to the incompleteness of the fossil and rock records. Five primary methods have been developed to estimate maximum age brackets, each of which is discussed. The fact that the fossilization potential of a group typically decreases the closer one approaches its time of origin increases the challenge of estimating maximum age brackets. Additional complications arise: 1 because fossil data actually bracket the time of origin of the first relevant fossilizable morphology apomorphy , not the divergence time itself; 2 due to the phylogenetic uncertainty in the placement of fossils; 3 because of idiosyncratic temporal and geographic gaps in the rock and fossil records; and 4 if the preservation potential of a group changed significantly during its history. In contrast, uncertainties in the absolute ages of fossils are typically relatively unimportant, even though the vast majority of fossil cannot be dated directly. These issues and relevant quantitative methods are reviewed, and their relative magnitudes assessed, which typically correlate with the age of the group, its geographic range, and species richness. Developing rigorous methods for using paleontological and geological data to estimate divergence times between lineages has proven challenging.

Aside from the stylistic debates and quarrels fueled by the studies of its painted and engraved walls, the Lascaux Cave stands out by its very weak and contradictory radiometric framework Delluc and Delluc In addition to this, no comprehensive, interdisciplinary study of the rich archaeological assemblages has been conducted for almost forty years Leroi-Gourhan and Allain As part of this work, a new effort has been made to clarify the Paleolithic chronology of the human activities documented by this stratified evidence.

While the sample from the Passageway area failed due to low collagen yield, the other four produced reliable and highly comparable measurements centered on a 14 C age of 17, uncal. BP These results confirm the two basic assumptions described above and contradict the diachronic framework defined by the radiometric data, while restoring a certain degree of chronological consistency which fits well with the main typo-technological features of the lithic and osseous equipment Allain , Leroy-Prost and ongoing analysis.

We are grateful to Jean-Jacques Cleyet-Merle, director of the MNP, for granting us access to the Lascaux collections and to Catherine Cretin for ensuring the best possible study conditions. Many thanks to Xavier Muth for the bone pictures derived from the 3D photogrammetric models and to Brigitte Delluc and Valerie Feruglio for providing us with highly valuable information about the previous 14 C dating programs. Our sincere thanks to Aitor Ruiz-Redondo for his last minute proofreading and to William Banks for his linguistic help.

Lastly, we are grateful to the four reviewers for their very useful and constructive suggestions that helped us to improve the initial manuscript. This question is far from trivial, however, as locating Lascaux through time means placing it within a techno-socio-economic environment, as part of a wider dynamic anthropological system.

The Nazca Lines are a collection of giant geoglyphs—designs or motifs etched into the ground—located in the Peruvian coastal plain about miles kilometers south of Lima, Peru. Created by the ancient Nazca culture in South America, and depicting various plants, animals, and shapes, the 2,year-old Nazca Lines can only be fully appreciated when viewed from the air given their massive size.

There are three basic types of Nazca Lines: straight lines, geometric designs and pictorial representations. There are more than straight lines on the coastal plain, some of which are 30 miles 48 km long. Additionally, there are over geometric designs, which include basic shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids, as well as spirals, arrows, zig-zags and wavy lines.

The Nazca Lines are perhaps best known for the representations of about 70 animals and plants, some of which measure up to 1, feet meters long. Examples include a spider, hummingbird, cactus plant, monkey, whale, llama, duck, flower, tree, lizard and dog.

The purpose of this noble gas investigation was to evaluate the possibility of measuring noble gases in martian rocks and air by future robotic missions such as the Mars Science Laboratory MSL. Here we suggest the possibility of K-Ar age dating based on noble gas release of martian rocks by conducting laboratory simulation experiments on terrestrial basalts and martian meteorites. We provide requirements for the SAM instrument to obtain adequate noble gas abundances and compositions within the current SAM instrumental operating conditions, especially, a power limit that prevents heating the furnace above approx.

In addition, Martian meteorite analyses from NASA-JSC will be used as ground truth to evaluate the feasibility of robotic experiments to constrain the ages of martian surface rocks.

Using the Fossil Record to Evaluate Timetree Timescales

Cosmic-ray exposure dating of preserved, seismically exhumed limestone normal fault scarps has been used to identify the last few major earthquakes on seismogenic faults and recover their ages and displacements through the modelling of the content of in situ [ 36 Cl] cosmonuclide of the scarp rocks. However, previous studies neglected some parameters that contribute to 36 Cl accumulation and the uncertainties on the inferred earthquake parameters were not discussed.

Through a series of synthetic profiles, we examine the effects of each factor on the resulting [ 36 Cl], and quantify the uncertainties related to the variability of those factors. Those most affecting the concentrations are rock composition, site location, shielding resulting from the geometry of the fault scarp and associated colluvium, and scarp denudation.

In addition, 36 Cl production mechanisms and rates are still being refined, but the importance of these epistemic uncertainties is difficult to assess. We then examine how pre-exposure and exposure histories of fault-zone materials are expressed in [ 36 Cl] profiles.

9.3 Organic Sedimentary Rocks

Organic sedimentary rocks are those containing large quantities of organic molecules. Organic molecules contain carbon, but in this context we are referring specifically to molecules with carbon-hydrogen bonds, such as materials from the soft tissues of plants and animals. An important organic sedimentary rock is coal. Most coal forms in swampy land adjacent to rivers and within deltas, and where climates are humid and tropical to temperate. The vigorous growth of vegetation leads to an abundance of organic matter that accumulates within stagnant, acidic water.

This limits decay and oxidation of the organic material.

Within the extent of the Grand Canyon and its many tributary canyons, there are exposures of rocks dating back to the late-early Proterozoic Eon million years.

This chapter describes a module which may be used for the encoding of names and other phrases descriptive of persons, places, or organizations, in a manner more detailed than that possible using the elements already provided for these purposes in the Core module. In section 3. The elements provided by the present module allow the encoder to supply a detailed sub-structure for such referring strings, and to distinguish explicitly between names of persons, places, and organizations.

This module also provides elements for the representation of information about the person, place, or organization to which a given name is understood to refer and to represent the name itself, independently of its application. In simple terms, where the core module allows one simply to represent that a given piece of text is a name , this module allows one further to represent a personal name , to represent the person being named, and to represent the canonical name being used.

A similar range is provided for names of places and organizations. The main intended applications for this module are in biographical, historical, or geographical data systems such as gazetteers and biographical databases, where these are to be integrated with encoded texts. The chapter begins by discussing attributes common to many of the elements discussed in the remaining parts of the chapter Elements for encoding personal and organizational data are discussed in section Elements for the encoding of geographical data are discussed in section Finally, elements for encoding onomastic data are discussed in Most of the elements made available by this chapter share some important characteristics which are expressed by their membership in specific attribute classes.

Radiometric dating , radioactive dating or radioisotope dating is a technique which is used to date materials such as rocks or carbon , in which trace radioactive impurities were selectively incorporated when they were formed. The method compares the abundance of a naturally occurring radioactive isotope within the material to the abundance of its decay products, which form at a known constant rate of decay. Together with stratigraphic principles , radiometric dating methods are used in geochronology to establish the geologic time scale.

By allowing the establishment of geological timescales, it provides a significant source of information about the ages of fossils and the deduced rates of evolutionary change. Radiometric dating is also used to date archaeological materials, including ancient artifacts. Different methods of radiometric dating vary in the timescale over which they are accurate and the materials to which they can be applied.
